I'd like to be an illustrator one day but i am 19?

Currently in college studyin architecture.I'd like to be an illustrator one day but i am 19?
i want to be a actor on TV so i convinced myself that the age that you can start at for being a teen actor ends at 16 but look at Matthew Broderick when he was in war games he was at least 20 or 21. As for illustrating you have to hoan your craft. as long as you keep practicing you will be successful in your art. try to take so art classes to broaden your artI'd like to be an illustrator one day but i am 19?
That's a start. Where do you go to college? You might want to find a college more specific. The first one is an excellent one.

so what if you're ';only 19';. do your drawings and illustrations. if you want to, also continue your architecture study. when you feel ready take your illustrations to someone to publish. you don't need a degreee when you have the skill and the evidence right there for them to look at. age isn't even a factor.
I had a Friend at 40 who totally changed his career from being a social worker to being a computer technician never to late your actually young enough to do both
That's great.. read a book called The Secret. You can do or achieve anything you want... it's all up to you. Good luck!
so what ?
commit to it!

Photoshop Illustrator Mapping object round sphere?

Hi I have a vector image of australia and I want to make it look like it is wrapped around the earth (sphere). I am looking for a simple tutorial step by step on how to do this. If anyone can simplify the process that would be great as every tutorial I find is incredibly involved. I didn't think it would be so hard to achive something so minor.

Thanks!!Photoshop Illustrator Mapping object round sphere?
Update: Why don't you have the Graphic option in the Symbol Options box? Grayed out? If so, maybe use Live Trace on Australia or try rasterizing it.

To get a sphere in Effect/3D/Revolve you have to start out with a half circle. Ellipse tool, hold down Shift, Direct Selection Tool, delete one anchor point to create a half circle.

Effect/3D/Revolve, check Preview box, the Revolve angle should be 360. Offset should be 0 and try changing the ';from'; box from Left or Right Edge. You should be seeing a sphere, not a cylinder.

I think you'll need at least Illustrator CS2 to do this. It's fairly simple actually.

1. Place your image of Australia in your new file.

2. Open the Symbols panel.

3. Select and drag Australia into the Symbols panel.

4. Choose Graphic in the Symbols Options box.

5. Deselect Australia.

6. Select the Ellipse tool and draw a circle.

7. Click the Direct Selection Tool and select one point on the side of the circle. Press Delete to make the circle a half circle.

8. Choose No Fill for the fill color and select some color for the Stroke color.

9. Choose Effect/3D/Revolve and then check the Preview box.

10. Click Map Art in the 3D Options box.

11. Choose the Australia symbol in the Symbol box in the Map Art dialog box. Click the Preview box.

That should do it for you.

To work in vector programs, which program is better: CorelDRAW Graphic suite X4 or Adobe Illustrator CS4 ?

I started my conversion from traditional to digital graphics, about fifteen years ago with the Corel suite of products. It was a great introduction to computer graphics and I learned a great deal about the bezier drawing tools in CorelDraw.

However, as I was picking up digital techniques as a part of the development of my freelance design business, I learned a LOT about the limits of Corel and the tremendous benefits of the Adobe line of products. ONE of the things I learned was the the Adobe line was the choice of pros AND, the print service bureaus ALL worked with the Adobe files where I had to search around for a good print shop that could work with Corel files.

Of course, a lot has changed now, and more and more amateurs are getting into digital tools. Corel has the advantage of being a LOT cheaper than the full version Adobe apps. With so many people buying Corel and other brands, print shops now, pretty universally accept formats other than Adobe's. But I also note the increasing number of shops that say they prefere files in .pdf format. I think that it will end up being a situation that, as long as you can convert Corel or other files into pdf, that it won't make any difference WHAT application the image was created in.

Here's my input to your question. I would never put down a product that does it's job well for the user. But, as a pro, working IN the industry, I find it much easier to communicate when using the terms used BY the pros. If someone speaks about a process using histograms, channels, levels and such, I will KNOW what is being discussed because the pros tend to know and use the same kinds of applications and tools. Not all the terms from Corel translate well to an Illustrator user, and vice versa.

The basic bezier, vector tools work the same in either product, but, Illustrator offers more opportunities to work with, adapt and modify vector drawings. For me, anything that will save me steps and time is well worth the investment. For a design pro, time really DOES equal money. But for the amateur, who just wants to create good digital artwork, it doesn't matter what tools he uses, as long as they work right.

Good luck with your choice. To work in vector programs, which program is better: CorelDRAW Graphic suite X4 or Adobe Illustrator CS4 ?

  • How do I convert fonts into objects in Adobe Illustrator 10?

Do I have to change all the fonts into jpeg, tiff, giff, etc.? Do I have to do that via Photoshop? Or is there an easier way of doing it.

I thought my fonts were objects. Except a logo I put together using individual letters. That wasn't showing up when I was went to select-%26gt;text objects.

What do I have to do to text to get it ready for a polymer? How do I convert fonts into objects in Adobe Illustrator 10?
Right click/convert text to outlines may be your best option.

This is usually something you would only do before you save the file as you will be unable to edit the text once you have done so.How do I convert fonts into objects in Adobe Illustrator 10?

I downloaded the trial version of adobe illustrator CS4, and I cant use the magic wand or the lasso tool on any image (ones I copied and pasted, or ones I drew myself) It just creates a lime green bounding box. Can't get the magic wand tool in illustrator to work?
There is no good options for editing image in illustrator because its not a image editing software

Magic and Lasso are works well in vector objects only you can also use the menu

select %26gt; same %26amp; object like magic wand

    Drawing with Adobe Illustrator?

Can anyone draw using basic shapes in Adobe Illustrator?

Using basic shapes like: circles, triangles, squares, etc.

Can you create animals, cars, sport items, etc. how?

Do you have to know how to draw to use this program?Drawing with Adobe Illustrator?
Illustrator only provides two basic shapes, (with variations): It has a circle and elipse tool, and a square, rectangle and rounded edge rectangle.

Any other shapes have to be made by hand, with a straight line tool, freehand drawing tool and the complex Bezier, vector drawing tools. To add color and shading to these shapes only adds to the complexity of using Illustrator for a beginning artist.

So, the basic answer is that , yes, you CAN draw things, using some basic shapes, and that knowing HOW to draw is very helpful. One thing that NO software application can do is let a BAD ';drawer'; be a good one.Drawing with Adobe Illustrator?
    Sure.

You can actually make your picture layout with those shapes first and then go in an tweak. That's what I do.

You should study a little bit about how things are put together though, because the coolness about Illustrator is using and controlling Anchor Points.

I also like using the Pen tool a lot.
sadly you could learn to draw like vincent van gogh before you can learn to use that program easily

    Photoshop vs Adobe Illustrator?

I'm planning DIY wedding invitations. Which program should I use? What's the difference between them? Which one is easier to use?Photoshop vs Adobe Illustrator?
Photoshop and Illustrator are 2 completely different programs for different needs. For what you want to do I would suggest using Illustrator. If you want to go the free route, there's a program called Inkscape that will pretty much allow you to do the same thing. It is fairly easy to use and wil still enable you to deliver high quality work. Most of these vector drawing programs are quite involved to learn, but that is well worth it in the scope that they offer for Graphic DesignPhotoshop vs Adobe Illustrator?
Photoshop is an raster based image manipulation program with some rudimentary type tools. Illustrator is a vector based illustration program with a very good and complex type engine, and other excellent graphics tools.

For a wedding invitation, you should be using illustrator. If you need to put photos or an image, use photoshop to manipulate the image, but build the card in Illustrator.
Photoshop is a pixel base application and Illustrator is vector base. You can see the difference when you zoom in on pictures made with PS (it becomes pixelated as you zoom in) and made with AI (maintain its color). In terms of use, I find PS easier to use. I recommend using PS for the invitation.
Well, as I graphic designer I choose Illustrator as you can have more options in regards to graphics and fonts. If you want to enlarge your images for A2 size poster, the Illustrator based graphic will still be 100% sharp as it's a vector based graphic programme. However, I am normally working across 2 platforms by manipulated my images in Photoshop (setting them in at lease 600 tpi resolution for best quality) then place them in Illustrator. There are lots of websites to show you some nice tricks and the like of www.dafont.com will provide you free beautiful fonts to download!

PS. I am getting married myself and making my own invitation!!

    Good luck!
This is a desktop publishing task not photo editing or drawing so Adobe InDesign or Microsoft Publisher are appropriate.

Can you draw - illustrator, artists wanted.?

I'm looking for an artist who can do illustrations for a children's book. I prefer to give an opportunity to someone new and up %26amp; coming rather than a professional. We can work together, (even on-line, so it doesn't matter what state you live in) and then present our work to a publishing house together. Understand that this is not a quick, money making opportunity. I will not pay you or receive payment from you. We will get paid from a publishing house if book gets accepted. Or you can sell your work to me, (if it's what I'm looking for), but then you lose all rights to royalties once the books go to market. Can you draw - illustrator, artists wanted.?

CanI I use older versions of Photoshop, Illustrator & Pagemaker on my iMac?

I have an iMac (version 10.4.9). I would like to know if I can use the following (older) versions of software on my Mac: Pagemaker 6.5, Photoshop 6.0 and Illustrator 9.0. If so, will they run properly?CanI I use older versions of Photoshop, Illustrator %26amp; Pagemaker on my iMac?
sure it will work fine .. these software are designed to work will all versions of mac and windowsCanI I use older versions of Photoshop, Illustrator %26amp; Pagemaker on my iMac?
All you can do is try. I'm really not sure. If you are running an Intel Mac, you might have more problems though; those programs while they may run under 10.4.9 OS, are probably also PowerPC compatible, not Intel compatible.

Pagemaker of course has gone away. InDesign is the current Adobe page layout and design program. Photoshop is several versions beyond 6.0, and Illustrator is a couple beyond 9.

So all I can say is good luck, try it if you have these programs. Worst that will happen is they won't work, but it's worth trying.

Sorry if this wasn't much help.

How can I import an .ai file (illustrator) into In Design?

Also, when I export a .ai file to a layered PhotoShop file, the layers are not the same as they were in Illstrator. Is this normal? How can I import an .ai file (illustrator) into In Design?
You can import native Illustrator files using the Place command (File menu), you can also drag and drop or copy and paste Illustrator files into InDesign to work with them as editable objects.

If you need to transfer editable text from Illustrator to InDesign, highlight the text in Illustrator, copy it, and then paste it into InDesign.

Before you copy and paste or drag and drop Illustrator objects into InDesign, make sure that Copy As AICB (Adobe Illustrator Clipboard) is checked in the File Handling %26amp; Clipboard panel of the Illustrator Preferences dialog box.

Questions about drawing on computer, adobe illustrator?

    1) what the f are vectors, explain very thoroughly.

    2) explain why i should use a billion layers, like a seperate one for each thing, i'm sure there's a good reason, i just don't know it.

    3) how the freakin hell do you do gradients?? i've just started trying to figure everything out and i've never done that kind of stuff before, i'm used to doing everything by hand, but this program isn't pressure sensitive...

please explain as if i were retardedQuestions about drawing on computer, adobe illustrator?
    1. There are two basic types of graphics: raster graphics and vector graphics. The visible difference between the two is that when you zoom in a lot on a raster graphic, the image will become blurry, whereas on a vector graphic, you'll view the same crisp image no matter how much you zoom in. Vector graphics are presented to your computer screen in mathematical formulae rather than images that aren't as accurate.

    2. Using layers allows for you to change your graphic a lot more easily. For example, if I was drawing a face, I would have a layer for his hair, eyes, mouth, etc. Then when I go back to color it, I can edit them individually and move them around individually without cutting it out first or re-drawing.

    3. Gradients are always a tool on image editting software like Photoshop, you can press the hotkey ';G'; on photoshop to get the gradient. It's under the same menu as the paint bucket, which is why you may be confused.Questions about drawing on computer, adobe illustrator?
    1. Vectors I have no clue.

    2. You should use a billion layers because it's easier that way. For example, you have something that you want to color, then you color and you mess up, you then erase and the entire picture or part of it is gone. That's where layers come in. You can create another layer so that if you mess up and erase then the bottom picture won't be erased as well. They are really useful and not only for that but for many many things which I can't really explain because I need to be doing it to explain.

    3. Ok for gradients you need to find like this little square icon that has black lightening up going into white. Then click it and choose your colors then you can use it by dragging it across the drawing area.

    ^_^ hope it helped.
Gradients, in Illustrator are a ';fill function.'; You have to select a closed object and then fill it. The object may or may not have a stroke around it. This object may be a vector drawn one or one drawn with the freehand brush or pencil tool.

If you can't draw you could try making a sprite comic. In sprite comics you use game sprites to create your comic. (However - as they are copyrighted you can't make any money off them). Sprite comic makers often edit and colour the sprites to make them unique.

The original drawing, ';From Cradle to Grave,'; which was a drawing after ';Artist Facing Blank Canvas (Deadline),'; sold at Sotheby's April 12,1990 6.7'; X 32.'; I checked his museum and there is no image. And I then I found this: In USA Today, Nov.2000: In presenting the Museum Today feature, ';Pictures for the American People: The Art of Norman Rockwell,'; in the July 2000 issue, copyright information on the paintings inadvertently was omitted. The following paintings are copyright[C] by The Curtis Publishing Company: ';No Swimming';; ';Artist Facing Blank Canvas (Deadline)';; ';Freedom from Want';; ';Freedom from Fear';; ';Freedom to Worship';; ';Freedom of Speech';; ';After the Prom';; ';The Gossips';; ';Going and Coming';; ';Christmas Homecoming';; ';Girl at Mirror';; ';Art Critic';; ';The Marriage License';; ';The Runaway';; ';Triple Self-Portrait';; ';Saying Grace';; ';Golden Rule';; ';Gary Cooper as the Texan';; ';Walking to Church';; and ';April Fool: Girl with Shopkeeper.'; http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m1鈥?/a>

Adobe illustrator Q? how do you merge layers to make one shape?

ok, so i know how to group things. I want to know how to make a shape with a hole in it and it will be one shape without a group. for example to make a donut shape. the way i do it is make a circle and another circle with a background color in it. but im sure there is an easier way! please help!Adobe illustrator Q? how do you merge layers to make one shape?
The Pathfinder palette is your friend.

The most common way to make your donut shape involves the Subtract function in the Pathfinder palette.

Drag out a circle. Drag out a smaller circle on top of it.

Optional: Select both circles and click Windows -%26gt; Align, and in the top row of icons, click the second (horizontal align center) and fourth (vertical align center) icons to line them up symmetrically.

Click Windows -%26gt; Pathfinder to open the Pathfinder palette (if it isn't already open).

Select both circles, and click the Subtract icon (2nd icon on top row).

Adobe Illustrator cs3 pen tool question?

I looked at some tutorials about the pen tool. When they make a path it seems like the path automatically turns into a regular black line. However, when I make path, it just stays red. How do I turn it into a real line?Adobe Illustrator cs3 pen tool question?
Sounds like you have a Path, but that Path has no Stroke (or a Stroke Weight of ';0';).

Look at your colors (in the Tools window... From the file menu, click Window %26gt; Tools). There's a square representing the fill color (color of solid objects) and a square ';outline'; representing the stroke color (color of edges of objects/lines). Make sure the square ';outline'; representing the stroke color HAS a color. If not, click on it and select your desired color (Make sure it differs from the color of the object/background behind it).

    If that isn't it...

With your path selected, hit CTRL+F10, -or- in the file menu, click Window %26gt; Stroke. This brings up the Stroke dialog. If the Stroke Weight is ';0'; (or some small integer), increase the Stroke Weight, and you should see your Path even when deselected.

Install vectors? Are you sure thats what you mean? The purpose of Illustrator is to create vector art, not install it. (Vector art is art that can be scaled to any size, large or smaller, and still keep the same pixelation. )

    Medical Illustrator Educational Requirements?

am considering pursuing the higher education to obtain a degree in medical illustration. However, as I was begining my research, I noticed the Medical Ilustrators have a BFA.

I have a BA in arts, concentrations in drawing and printmaking from a 4 year private college.

Would this be applicable to continue to become a medical illustrator?Medical Illustrator Educational Requirements?
They do not need a degree in medicine. One should be skilled in line drawing and accurate in rendering details. Things like fine structures of various anatomical structures at rest, at work, in health and disease are important relative dimensions have to be maintained, which is not easy with 3D plastic forms.

The ability to work with temperamental clinicians is also an added need.

Looks as though you are fully equipped as you are.

Who is your favorite quirky illustrator, what's your favorite book they've illustrated?

My favorite has to be the late Dr. Seuss. He wrote and illustrated 44 childrens books, some of which were made into tv shows and movies. I even hear there is an amusement park ride in Orlando. To pick a favorite is really tough. I suppose the Grinch who Stole Christmas is the classic, but I'd recommend ';Oh The Places You'll Go'; for illustrations. Dr. Seuss is hard to beat...Who is your favorite quirky illustrator, what's your favorite book they've illustrated?
Bill Sienkiewicz - did the artwork for Frank Miller's ';Elektra: Assassin,'; which is really experimental, uses many different styles, almost stream-of-consciousness. Obviously, a comics artist does more than mere illustrations, as the story is largely told through the art... but that's another issue altogether.

Lane Smith, who did The Stinky Cheese Man, is also very clever.

Difference between photoshop, fireworks, illustrator and indesign?

what are the distinctive characteristics of fireworks, illustrator and indesign comparing to photoshop?Difference between photoshop, fireworks, illustrator and indesign?
Fireworks is targeted towards web graphics. It's good for making all the little buttons and symbols a web page may need.

    Adobe states: ';Fireworks is a much more focused tool with features for prototyping vectors and bitmaps for the web and application interfaces.';

Illustrator is focused on vector graphics. Vector graphics can scale up or down without loss of resolution. It is good to use when you need large sized graphics like giant posters, car decals and signs. It has other benefits as well. But the biggest is that it works well from business card size to billboard size.

Adobe states: ';What is Illustrator CS4 and who is it for?

    Adobe Illustrator CS4 software is a comprehensive vector graphics environment that is ideal for all creative professionals, including web and interactive designers and developers, multimedia producers, motion graphics and visual effects designers, animators, and video professionals.';

Indesign is geared mostly toward print. Books, magazines, catalogs, and newspapers tend to find it's features helpful.

Photshop is a general tool, mostly geared for professional photographers and graphics designers.

  • How to fill an illustrator line?

I am using version CS and I know you have to complete closed line in order to do a complete line. How would I go about if I have pieces that will not join. I have an example to show so I am open to ideas. Thanks! http://i110.photobucket.com/albums/n83/Sparklebabe_01/exaple.jpgHow to fill an illustrator line?
These are not the easiest sketches, but basically you need to close any shapes to have a uniform fill. You need to have 2 main shapes; top and lower part of the dress.

Then, select 2 points, not necessarily on top of each other, and hold Ctrl+J. It will join the 2 points by a line.

good luckHow to fill an illustrator line?
Sometimes, the best is to separate outline to colour fill. On a first layer you create the outline, and the layer below, you create a new path that fills the outline. so the outline does not need to be closed and the drawing will be more accurate.

Can you upload a Illustrator file on Cafepress?

No. As far as I know, they only accept .jpgs and .pngs. Almost no place will accept a native Illustrator file (.ai), other than perhaps a true printing press service that will most likely use a .pdf workflow.

Why does my adobe illustrator say preview on top?

    LOL...you're new to this, right?

There are 2 view modes in Illustrator - ';Preview'; and ';Outline.'; ';Preview'; shows you what your art will look like printed. ';Outline'; shows you the geometry of the shapes, anchor points etc. If you go to the ';View'; menu, it's the first option to toggle back and forth between these modes.

Corel draw is RASTER(from what i remember):

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Raster_grap鈥?/a>

I would go with ILLUSTRATORWhich is the best software for signage field? Adobe illustrator or Corel draw?
Actually, Corel Draw is a vector design program with raster effect capabilities, much the same as AI has become.

I've been in the sign business for over a decade, and I've used all kinds of programs: CADlink's SignLAB, FlexiSign, Graphix Advantage, so on and so forth...

The ONE thing that has been been a constant is the fact that I've had to be conversant in the Adobe products, no matter what

else I'd been using since they are pretty much the industry standard. I've used AI and Photoshop almost exclusively the past few years.

Side Note: ALL vector programs behave pretty much the same way, same as all raster programs. It's just a difference in interfacing.

    Good Luck!

    and ALL raster

If you want to be a children's illustrator?

Hi. I'd love to be a children's illustrator. I have a problem, though. I can do a nice job if I look at something and then draw it. But I can't draw from memory. Well, isn't that what talented people are able to do without difficulty? thanx for advice %26amp; opinionIf you want to be a children's illustrator?
I am one of those who CAN draw, very well, from memory.

However, even my memory cannot hold the sum total of all of the world's objects and their appearance from all angles. I have, in my studio, a file cabinet full of clips, winnowed from magazines, calandars, book, newspapers and online sources. I also have about fifteen linear feet of shelf spase containing books and more magazines with more photographic references. I have cars, planes, boats, trees, flowers mountains, landmarks, people, costumes, uniforms, jewelry, animals, trains, rockets, weapons, tools and equipment and much, much more.

If I need to compose a new image of a pride of lions and some cubs, I have, no less than a dozen images I can lay my hands on within minutes. More, if I go to my online sources. I can choose the face from one image, a body from another and foot placement from a third. I may create a cub's image from scratch, but, I can refer to different photos to make sure my proportions, expressions and anatomy are correct and age appropriate for the subject

The result would be a completely original composition, accurate in every way.

By the way, when I mentioned that I can draw from memory, I could do this composition that way, and, most people would say it is ';pretty good.'; But, for a paying client, ';pretty good'; is NOT good enough. I strive for excellence in my professional work. But, what it takes to be a pretty good, ';from memory'; sketch artist is a LOT of practice drawing from real life, and photographic references.

Look, no matter how talented someone is, if an artist is asked to draw an Australian wallaby, his memory will do no good unless he knows what one looks like. Because of my practice, if someone asks me to draw a horse, I know the difference in appearence between a cow pony, quarter horse, thoroghbred, plow horse, even the subtle differences between a Percheron and a Clydesdale. But I would still pull out my images from the ';morgue'; to make sure I got it right enough to satisfy someone else who also knows the difference. If you want to be a children's illustrator?
Au contraire to popular belief, illustrators use lots of references! Many people think that it comes from memory and it sometimes does but that's because they've studied the references and kept it in mind.

I always found that drawing from imagination was strangely difficult when I had to represent an animal, scenery, etc. My Advanced Illustration class and Children's Illustration class (She's the same lady.) is one of the upper members of the Society of Illustrators in NYC and she constantly reminded us that we HAVE to have references to create successful images. I'm not sure about it being necessary all the time but it does help!

    Anyway...Good luck! :D

How can you be so stupid!

    Its what its made for!!

hahaaaWhy is Adobe Illustrator good for vector grahpics?
It is excellent because it creates graphics which will integrate well with other software. If you have other adobe products (after effects for example) you just need to do the one import and the ynamic link will update the after effects file with any changes you make to your illustartor file. This is VERY time saving.

It also works well with 3d software like maya or c4d; you can export your 2d vector graphics and extrude them into 3d objects very simply
The illustrations you create in Adobe Illustrator are vector based, as opposed to pixel based like in Photoshop. This is perfect for illustrations that you want to make very small or very large. No matter what size the image is, it maintains it's sharpness.
What???? Because it was created for Vector graphics! That's like asking why is Internet Explorer good for browsing the internet.

Which job is better? graphic designer or illustrator?

i really like art, and i think these two career choices is very interesting, its hard to decide which one to choose, and i really need help on making a decision, i want to know which one is better? thanksWhich job is better? graphic designer or illustrator?
Graphic Designer is going to sound better in the job market. Illustrator sounds too much like ';starving artist'; to a lot of people. Really, though you can use both skill sets, depending on what job you get into. I always managed to work illustration skills into the design area when I just had to have a particular look. If you have the talent and the time, the two skills will come together once in a while.

But for education and job-hunting purposes, I would focus on thinking of myself and calling myself ';Graphic Designer'; even if I know I'm an illustrator at heart. :)Which job is better? graphic designer or illustrator?
Um Neither, just become a graphic illustrator and forget about it.
    Illustrators create, draw, render images.

Graphic Designers handle the whole process (they may also illustrate) from the mark-ups, thumb-nails, to managing getting the camera ready art to the printer and then to the client on deadline.
Define what ';better'; means to you.

I do it all, but, then, I have to, as a freelancer.

Being a good illustrator enhances my profitability as a designer, because I don't have to go out an hire an illustrator when I need one. If I have to create graphics from scratch, I charge my clients, accordingly, and that just adds to my potential bottom line.

I have come in contact with many excellent designers who can't draw much beyond stick figures, but are deep conceptual artists and can visually communicate very complex ideas.

    This brings me back to my first question to you. What do you mean by ';better?';
';better'; is a matter of opinion and circumstance. I can tell you that is easier to find a career in graphic design than it is in illustration, but the work is far less creative. If you truly have a passion for illustration then follow that dream, but if you do not, then graphic design offers a carrer that still allows you a creative outlet while not solely relying on your illustrative talent. You can be both, by the way. Some of the best graphic design has illustrative qualities to it and hand drawn, unique elements will often look better than something created on the computer.
Graphic design is a job that provides many more avenues in the market. The problem is that you might end up being a photoshop or illustrator monkey. (The softwares.) Illustration is an uphill battle and many end up as freelancers.

If you have your heart on illustration the go for it! Just don't be lazy. Continue to work on your portfolio replacing work so it doesn't become a massive body of work to send art directors into a visual vertigo. (6-10 pieces is decent but it always varies.) Illustration can be very stressful as well if you are freelancing. It's good to work for a company your first venture out there cause a company rarely will bounce a check or sue you.. let alone it's regular income. Also be open as a illustrator. Work with familiar mediums but on contact.. be ready to paint/draw a flower one day and a baseball player the next. (Reflect diversity in a portfolio aswell.)

Both are great skills/jobs and who says you can't do both. If you make the time and are dedicated you could easily find yourself in both fields or merging back and forth between the two. Just keep your skills honed and keep a good portfolio always on hand. (Er.. or in your room with your fresh and best work.)

    Creativity: Either is good.

Like both have said before, the best graphic designers have very illustrative styles or use illustration skills in design. But you aren't going to do what you like to do often. Sometimes you'll get projects that you like but many times they hire you to make thier boring product interesting. You're the one that takes the 'boring' edge of things.

    Dragging images in Adobe Illustrator?

I don't like where I drew something in Adobe Illustrator. Is there something I can do to move it to another end of the page? Also, how would I shrink and enlarge things? To move something, select the black arrow tool, then simply click the object, and when you see the bounding box around the selected object, click and drag to move it.

When you have the item selected (with the black arrow) you will notice white squares in the corners and the sides of the bounding box. These are called nodes. If you click them and drag, you will resize the image. If you hold down the shift key and click and drag any of the corner nodes, you will be able to maintain equal proportion of the image.

You can scan images an put them into Illustrator. Create a new layer, then with the new layer selected, go to file, then place, and a browse window will appear for you to select the file you want to trace. Select it and the picture will place into Illustrator, be sure to lock the layer. Create a new layer above it, then trace away. Yes you can use the brush tool as well to trace if you like.

I am very new to mac and all the other design programs. I would like to buy a mac book but don't know which one to choose. what should I look for ? can someone suggest me something please? thank you in advance.I want to use illustrator, indesign and photoshop. which mac should I buy? can someone help?
    Hey,

I'm a graphic designer and use a new iMac which is great.

Depending on the type of work you are going to be doing i would get as much RAM as you can and as big a screen as you can so you have plent of room to work.

G5 with oodles of RAM and a nice big HD screen would be nice however a something along the lines of a 20inch iMac would do the job!

if you need to design ';on the move'; as it were get a mac book pro, or a normal mac book if the finances are tigh-ish.

Hope this helps :)I want to use illustrator, indesign and photoshop. which mac should I buy? can someone help?
the one with the most ram you can afford

ram is the most important thing for you, above the processor and above the video card

otherwise save money for an external hard drive, to keep your work stuff safe and off the laptop drive

Easiest way to create 3D looking pie charts in Illustrator?

What is the easiest way to create 3D styled pie charts like 33%-33%-33% in Illustrator or would it be easier in InDesign?Easiest way to create 3D looking pie charts in Illustrator?
Definitely Illustrator. InDesign can't really do that. I've created a tutorial video for you how to create one in Illustrator CS 2:

    http://www.megaupload.com/?d=T5TK2GOF

You will have to input the security code and wait a while before the download starts. It's a zip file, so you will have to unzip it. There are two files: a flash movie and a html file. Start the tutorial by opening the html file; otherwise the scaling will be off. I tried uploading it to a movie site, but the scaling was much too small (http://www.zippyvideos.com/6099870236958鈥?/a>

Another option is making use of teechart office (on a windows machine). Very nice looking graphs that you can export as an image or eps/pdf (I have to admit those last two options really look bad, though)

How can i get my son hired as an illustrator.?

he has loads of talent and draws all the time. he is 15. does anyone know an easy way to find writers looking for illustrators. How can i get my son hired as an illustrator.?
Start by picking up a book called ';Artists Market.'; It comes out annually and contains a pretty good list of publishers and agencies that are know to accept unsolcited artwork each year. It lists names, addresses and contact information, including the specific person that actully does the purhcasing. It's important to get the newest edition because the Art Director for a particular magazine last year, may not be working there this year.

The book also offers a LOT of good advice on how a freelance artist can best market himself, with information of portfolios, query letters and whether or not to send originals or copies, hard copy or digital formats, etc. The most common procedure is to send a query letter, along with an SASE, asking for their submission guidlines. It is important to follow these guidlines as publishers tend to trash submissions from people who can't follow simple directions.

By the way, with a few exceptions, the publishers will match the illustrator with the author.

Do the homework and market research before you promote your son's work. You can spend a lot of wasted time, effort and money chasing after the wrong market. There IS NO easy way. If it were easy, then there woudn't be any ';starving artists.';How can i get my son hired as an illustrator.?
If he's 15, then he has a long way to go yet, even if he's very talented. He should keep drawing, learning, and going to school. After he gets out of high school, he should apply to art colleges, if for nothing else than to get his portfolio reviewed and an idea of his strong and weak points. I hate to sound callous or cynical, but I think all supportive parents of artistic kids think their kids art is amazing. That's not to say he might not be, just saying at his age, you should be pushing him to learn, grow and practice. Not trying to shove him out into the work force to make money with his ';talent'; (and trust me, it's one of the most competitive fields out there. As good as he may be, I'll bet he still has TONS of room to improve before he can make a viable living at it, and you don't want to push him into the workforce only for him to find out there are people who are significantly more able bodied than he is (it's not just about talent, it's also about versatility and knowledge of various techniques and tools) which might have the opposite effect of what you want (it would discourage him and maybe push him away from pursuing his dream). See what kind of programs his high school might have. A lot of them have internship programs in the senior year, he might be able to get into that program and intern at a ad agency or some other art related business that he might gain valuable insight and experience.
please don't meddle in your sons life, he will not appreciate it at the age he is at.

BUT, i'd recommend putting him into an art school, his doodles are all well and dandy, but he will need proper training before he gets any real money from it

aside from that, you could maybe encourage him to write a comic or something? just to see if he's interesting in all of that, and if it's good and he does indeed have talent, you can then maybe even get it published. just contact a local publisher, don't aim for anything too big
Hey, what's his name? (if you dont mind me asking)

I'm shani (age: 15), and I'm an aspiring author, yet to be published. It might not be instant, but if he's willing, I can contact him if sometihng comes up. i can also speak to some of my contacts, and see if I can get him something.

If you aren't interested in using me, you can go to www.fictionpress.com you'll find heaps of authors on the forums there.
Buy the 2009 Artist Market($30). It lists all publications that accept art work. It tells you the publication, the editors, how to submit your work, how much they pay and lot of other information. It's a terrific resource for artists.
the best way to get him noticed is to put him through college where lots of opportunities like that sill come up.

you could send a book of his sketches to a publishing company and they can decide if they like them

Hi Tudor, I think I may have to answer to your question, if you haven't found it already. From what you said I take it that the ';bounding box'; that you can use to scale the object has disappeared.

If you go to View %26gt; Show bounding box. That should fix your problem. If you go to View, but there is no option titled ';show bounding box'; then that's not the problem. But I'm pretty sure that's it.

Fill, fills the shape with a color. Stroke adds color around the outside of a shape. A gradient is a transition from one color to another within a shape.

HELP! Does anyone know how to import characters from illustrator into typetool? ?

I'm assuming you mean that you've drawn characters by hand in illustrator and want to make a font of them.

Each character will have to be it's own separate .eps file. I recommend saving down to Illustrator 9 EPS, it'll flatten your art and remove anything not compatible with typetool.

If you don't know how to use illustrator your best bet is to use the live trace option. Open the image you want to create in illustrator and select it at the top in the tool bar there is a button that says live trace click on it and go through the options and it will do it for you. If you know how to use illustrator at all the image you show is really simple to trace with the pen tool. just click on the end of each section then another point on the line and drag out your mouse to curve it. Live trace is really easy to use for the beginner. The best way is to practice and read all the design forums you can find.

    Illustrator wand,

    http://www.coe.fau.edu/abinder/handouts/…

when you refer to selecting entire picture, this suggest that you've import image from photoshop or other, thus the image has not been un-rasterized from image to vector outlines first or yet, for example if you type text, it on a line, from type menu, select outlines, then each letter becomes outlined,

but for image, it stays image as one until changed to vector outlines

Sure, it's quite easy actually. The first place I usually search is the Adobe website itself - there is a section call Adobe Studio Exchange';. It's basically a designer's community broken down into subsections relating to the particular software you are looking into. Once you get to the section, in this case Illustrator, you can search through more subsections that include brushes, templates, ect. You will have to create an account with the Adobe Studio Exchange - its free and well worth it - you have access to a plethora of great Adobe resources. Here is the link :

Meaning what keys do I punch to get an ';o'; with a (' comma) over it? Ctrl + o? How does that usually work?I downloaded some fonts, how do I install them so Adobe Illustrator can use them?
To answer your first question first, to install new fonts in Windows XP (i'm sorry I have no experience with Mac), use the following procedure:

Go to Control Panel, switch it to Classic View.

Double click on the Fonts. This opens a window with the C:\Windows\Fonts\ folder.

Now click on File %26gt; Install New Font

Use the Folders box to locate where you have saved your Fonts file.

The folder selected can contain multiple fonts and in that case select the font in the list that you want to add.

Click OK and your font can be used in any application, like Adobe Illustrator, but also in Word, Excel, Powerpoint.

I have included a link that I found that explains the procedure in screenshots.

For your second question, this depends, what kind of font is it? Is it a Unicode type font? Which language is it in? Have you installed the language on your computer? You are probably best of to get an answer to that question by providing more information and also post it in a forum of the language that you want to type.I downloaded some fonts, how do I install them so Adobe Illustrator can use them?
You put them in your fonts folder. If you have a mac, you are in luck. Windows has this awful system of using keypad numbers to access over asci 128. Or copy them from character map under system tools. A pain. I wrote a visual basic routine for the ones I use the most. Still a pain. Or you can modify your keyboard and get some help. Still a pain.

I am suffering this problem at the moment...

(only on a complex piece of work with placed images, - no problem with simple work)

I have just managed to save the 'unsaveable' file by removing any placed images and replacing them with 'linked' versions (as opposed to directly 'placed' images)

    - also as a backup I copied all my linework into another file (as a single layer with no placed images ....saved in about 3 seconds as opposed to the '2 minute save then error message' I was encountering with the original file)

Deleting your preferences file may also fix the problem.

UPDATE: By deselecting ';PDF Compatibility'; in the Save Dialog Box, my 'Save' time dropped from about 1 minute to about 3 seconds....

I got that tip from the following link (amongst a couple of others to try)
