How to fill an illustrator line?

I am using version CS and I know you have to complete closed line in order to do a complete line. How would I go about if I have pieces that will not join. These are not the easiest sketches, but basically you need to close any shapes to have a uniform fill. You need to have 2 main shapes; top and lower part of the dress.


Then, select 2 points, not necessarily on top of each other, and hold Ctrl+J. It will join the 2 points by a line.

Sometimes, the best is to separate outline to colour fill. On a first layer you create the outline, and the layer below, you create a new path that fills the outline. so the outline does not need to be closed and the drawing will be more accurate.
