I want to edit drawings that I scan into the computer...should I get Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator?

What are the differences between the programs. And will I need both?I want to edit drawings that I scan into the computer...should I get Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator?
i think you need to define what kind of editing you want to do. If you want to take the drawings from your scans and make them --- true illustrations - vector based so they are crisp clean and scaleable not matter what - illustrator is the way to go... the new live paint %26amp; live color %26amp; live trace features in CS3 will give you a more ';natural'; drawing effect. However - it's been my experience that people learning illustrator have a steeper learning curve. But i think the art is much cleaner and crisper in illustrator.

Photoshop is more natural as far as computer programs go for design of photos and scans... but - if you're not sure, watch some training videos, like mine at xtrain, for free before making the big investment in either program.

if you are going to get into design for a career, getting the design suite would give you indesign, illustrator and photoshop but is a higher price.I want to edit drawings that I scan into the computer...should I get Adobe Photoshop or Illustrator?
You would need Photoshop first because when you scan something it is like making a photograph of it. It's raster based (pixels). You would not be able to automatically open it in Illustrator. You can bring an image into Illustrator and trace it. Illustrator is vector based. Raster based programs (photoshop, PaintShopPro, Gimp, etc) are resolution dependent: you cannot just make images bigger, they will pixelate. Vector programs are resolution INdependent: because the images are based on mathematical formulas and points, lines, curves, you can make something at one size and change the size without losing quality.

You really do want both, each has its purposes and uses, and you can use files from one for specific purposes in the other.
naw.. photoshop is the way to go.. but if you want something open source and free go with 'gimp'... good stuff.. it's what I use..

oh and in terms of who is better between photoshop or illustrator.. here's a site that breaks it down better than i can
